Listen up, children.

We all have to live here. We've come a long way in these walls and while the current regime isn't about locking you up to get this nonsense sorted out, that doesn't mean they shouldn't.

This isn't a sideshow freak tour. Don't get your grubby hands all over the glass or litter all your useless trash all over halls, we have a raccoon for that, and she's likely more tidy than the rest of you.

Go deal with the flooding or something useful, will you.

What Lucifer means to say is, hey guys. This message is intended for the people showing up in Thorne unexpectedly. Welcome to the castle! Sorry about the shitty situation, and also for literally everything he just said.

Since we've almost entirely run out of people with more seniority and better people skills, we figured it was kind of up to us to step up and go over a few things with you, or answer any questions you might have.

I think first and foremost, if you're not... super familiar already, Thorne is a little less loosey goosey than you might be used to from the Free Cities or Solvunn. We're more tightly monitored here, and the things we do tend to have a sort of ripple effect on the people around us, so. Just. Something to keep in mind. We also try not to all go to the Horizon at once, it gets a little suspicious, so if you can, try and stagger it out.

Usually Istredd is the one teaching beginner magic classes and I just assist him, but since he's gone, I guess I can... pick up on a few until he gets back? So if you're not already familiar and want to learn some basics, you can check out the class schedule and come in whenever.

Also, the raccoon isn't feral, mostly, but it's not really a good idea to piss her off. And please put your library books back in the same condition you found them. That one's more of a personal request.

I think that's mostly it. Was there anything else?

I'm not teaching any of you enchantments.

If you end up in someone else's occupied room don't rifle through their possessions. Besides, the rest of us have likely already have done that, anyway.

Ask around for Dion if you need other general assistance. He's--I don't know, he's around somewhere.

Great. That's so helpful. Thanks.

Anyway, that's all. So. The end. Bye!

Everyone. There has been nothing convenient about entertaining a few of our divine friends these past months. At this point, I believe some of them meddle in our lives on purpose. But you know how these beings are. Loving, violent and above all selfish. But their conduct should never be mistaken as good or bad.

Do you want the opinion of a professional? It’s human.

Of course, when I examine our delusions about being divine, and remember my mortal origins, it motivates me to question where they come from.

Were they once human like us?

In any case, I would like to remind you that your memories will take you by surprise. Not today. Nor tomorrow. But someday you will recall more about who you were, and perhaps find you cannot stand it. And whether that happens today or tomorrow, take a seat and have a drink, and try not to take yourself too seriously.

Hi, everyone. My name's Jack.

Some of you know this already, but I'm a writer. I kept a blog back home, and I was working on adapting it into a book series, but that didn't really pan out, considering the whole... temporal kidnapping thing. Several months ago I started writing for a few periodicals, and then eventually published my first real book here in Thorne shortly after. Which is pretty cool! But not really what I came here to talk about.

Writing, for me, has always been a kind of coping mechanism. I'm not always very good at analyzing things real-time, my brain works much better in hindsight, and sitting down to recount the things that I've been through helps me process it all in a way that's easier for me to really understand on a deeper level.

Also, for full transparency, it helps me keep a check on my sanity. It started as a suggestion from my therapist, actually, which is a much longer story that I won't bore you all with right now. The point is, having a written account of things that have happened, which are verifiable and which line up with my memory of events months or years later, has really helped me.

So I was thinking, after everything we just went through, it might help some of you guys, too. I want to put together an anthology series. If you're not familiar with the concept, it's basically a book, or several books, containing a combination of works from different writers or artists all revolving around a central theme — in this case, the theme would be surrounding our shared alternate reality. I thought maybe if we all had the ability to write stories, or poems, or make art, or just express ourselves about the absolutely unbelievable events of eight hundred years of interconnected lifetimes, maybe we could all understand each other (and ourselves) a little better.

At the very least, maybe some of us would feel better.

You don't have to use your real name, you can take as much artistic liberty as you want. It could be a story, or a song, or art, or whatever you need to do in order to express yourself. And then, eventually, when everybody's finished, I'll put it all together and make sure anybody who wants a copy gets one.

So, yeah, that's it. If you're interested, just let me know, I guess.

( ooc: I've gone ahead and created a master post here for anyone who wants to contribute to this! Each comment would essentially act as another section or chapter of the book. You can either have your character actually write out a story, or you can provide a summary and link directly to a thread if you'd rather handwave the retelling! You're also welcome and highly encouraged to have characters submit poems or in-character artwork! Feel free to hit me at [plurk.com profile] paingravy or find me on Discord for any questions or suggestions! )

heyo, senseis, it’s me, jerry. i have questions.

when we ~transcend~ into this higher plane of consciousness, is our body just chinchillin’ out in reality, totally out of touch? like if someone tries to lick my eyeball, or draw a dickbutt on my face, does the matrix shoot me a ping? or am i just waking up to pink eye?

has a rogue multidimensional being ever hijacked someone’s consciousness while they’re out fishing? y’all ever meet any primeval dark gods of inconceivable pain out there?

has anyone tried calibrating a radio to pick up this frequency instead of playing pink eye roulette?

how do I know which body to come back to? what if i end up in brenda?

how much does perception shape the horizon? if i drop acid, can i effectively transform the singularity into one of those big inflatable wiggly boys they put outside used car dealerships?

let a girl know

Hey, so I'm assuming at least some of y'all found that sparkler thing in your domain? If you haven't already, maybe..... don't touch it? Like at all. Except to bury it or throw it in a trash compactor or something.

Also probably do a quick sweep around your domains and check for anything else weird or out of place or creepy. Or with the Fool arcana. Just a thought.

Selfies might be a bad idea right now too.

Hi, it's Nadine Cross with a couple of semi-regular announcements.

This first bit is mostly for the Free Cities, but just a reminder that Salves & Stitches in Cadens is here for all your medical needs. Care for Summoned is free of cost, but we don't say 'no' to donations. We offer basic medical care for injuries and common ailments, as well as a full apothecary stocked with all the usual and some things you can't find anywhere else.

Which brings me to the second part, which is for everybody. One of the things I offer that no one else does is cannabis. It's grown right here in my greenhouse, it's very potent, and yes magic is involved in growing it. And I have ways of getting it to Solvunn and Thorne, I have sales representatives in both places. We have traditional joints, candies, tonics, and topical salves. Just look for the 'Vegas Botanicals' logo. Or ask about who to talk to in your respective kingdom.

And Salves & Stitches is always hiring, from medical staff to sales.

Thank you for your time.

I understand that this is a bit sudden, but...

If you were looking for a writer's pseudonym, what would you consider a good fit?

Just nothing sounding like a nickname for a mercenary or gang member, please.

Aurelius once wrote, "If you are distressed by anything external, the pain is not due to the thing itself, but to your estimate of it; and this you have the power to revoke at any moment."

My fundamental concern about this wisdom is that it fails to spot the physical root of trauma. People who cannot snap out of their distress also deserve compassion and treatment.

My apologies for the intrusion. Locals informed me about the recent chaos and I found myself concerned and a little hesitant about reaching out. Back home I treat those who approach me for support with their mental health. I had excellent resources there but here I can offer nothing but a listening ear.

I understand some of you might be feeling exposed, stressed and intimidated. To you I offer my own wisdom. If you worry about what lies ahead, you will be the only one who suffers in the end.

To all else, kind regards for listening.

Oh. Reading, isn’t it? This system is entirely new to me. What a brave new world this place is.

Hey, everybody. My name's Jack, and I think I should probably start this thing out with an apology and a warning.

This is probably going to get long, and I can almost guarantee most of you won't find it interesting at all. To be perfectly transparent, I think it's a pretty safe bet that if you have even the slightest disinterest in reading stories that are completely irrelevant to you, you're going to want to go ahead and magically mute this message. Seriously, this is about to be the definition of 'too long, didn't read'. Sorry for cluttering your heads-up display, I'm not really sure of a better way to make this thing opt-in.

This post is intended for people who are bored, or curious, or maybe just really, really desperate for something to read while sitting on the toilet.

Back home, I used to run a blog. For those of you from worlds that don't have blogs, it's basically like a diary or a journal entry that you post in a public space for strangers to read, and then make really judgmental comments about. I'm not selling the premise very well, but trust me when I say there's something reassuring about putting your story into the public domain. Writers probably get different things out of it, but for me, it's nice to have a sort of "reality check-point". For reasons I won't bore you with, there are times in my life where I question my memories, or the nature of my reality. Having other people in the world who can remember something with me, or who can shed some light on what happened, has literally saved my life once or twice. It was my therapist's idea. Sort of.

The thing is, my blog posts aren't actually about me exactly. They're about the truly bizarre, absolutely balls-out insane things that happen around me, or things that I get to see, whether I like it or not. Usually not.

Lately, it's mostly been the latter.

I think most (if not all) of us have been granted gifts by the singularity. I'm pretty sure mine have just been taking little things that already happened to me back home and amping them up about a thousand times. I've been seeing people's memories. I don't have a lot of control over it, it just sort of... happens. A lot of the time they're boring, inane things. People brushing their teeth, eating, waiting in line, stuff like that. One truly horrific memory of somebody beating somebody else half to death with what looked like a Hitachi magic wand, but I didn't see who exactly that one came from and I think I'm happier not knowing. Those aren't the ones I want to talk about, though.

Today, I want to talk about the ocean.

tl;dr read more beneath the cut )

Hi. It's Nadine again, the healer in Cadens.

A couple of months ago, I got funding from the Cadens Academy of Medicine to work on developing new medications utilizing a combination of local ingredients and floral ingredients from my own world that I've had magically grown here. It's a project I started before I got official funding, but things have gone a lot quicker since I had the money and lab equipment I really needed.

Long story short, I have a few things that have reached the testing stage. And I need volunteers to test them out.

Obviously this is easiest if you're in the Free Cities, but I can meet anyone in Nocwich. You can try it out and contact me with your feedback.

The three things I'm ready to do more testing on are:

A topical oil for muscle and joint pain. Three levels of potency - minor, moderate, major.

A concentrated syrup to be taken alone or mixed into a beverage. Three varieties to treat a variety of ailments - physical pain, digestion distress, or insomnia.

Bathing powder for use of treating minor to moderate joint and muscle pain.

Okay, time for the disclaimers. At high potency levels, there IS a psychoactive effect. Like a lot of heavy duty pain medication, you'll likely feel sleepy and a little out of it. Or a lot out of it. Or euphoric. Or paranoid. Music will probably sound a whole lot cooler and you'll find your appetite stimulated. And I can only guarantee those possibilities in humans. I have no idea how this will effect anyone who isn't or isn't entirely human. That's why I need to test this stuff.

And for anybody from Earth thinking 'those effects sound familiar', yes, the floral ingredient from my world is cannabis.

I can compensate you for your time.

If you're interested, just let me know what you'd like to help me test and if you're local or from Thorne or Solvunn.

Hi. This is Sophia...not really speaking. Thinking? Projecting words into your unsuspecting eyes. I think? This is quite something.

I won't bother you much with my shock and awe about finding myself in a new place. I'm sure there's enough people experiencing the same things than me in your close vicinity. Help them, if you would. I'm sure they will appreciate it.

My reason to send this message is to offer my own help, in one way or another. Back in my world I was finally getting settled into what I had decided to call Dream Therapy. Basically, I can help you dwell into whatever issues you have and find positive, healthy ways to deal with them.

In your dreams. Weird, I know.

I've found that it's easier to visualize and deal with things one feel and think when you can make the issues literally show themselves. Ultimately it's all symbolic of course, but the learning one makes from it it's real indeed.

We can also just talk it out wide awake, I have some training in the more normal type of stuff.

Goodness, this has taken all too much space already. I'll just leave it at that. I don't really need payment of any sort, by the way. Just knowing I'm doing my part is enough.

Anyway, do let me know if you ever need something along those lines. Or if you just want to talk. I feel like I will have much free time for a while.

Hey, guys. Good morning, or... afternoon. Evening? Does Abraxas have different time zones? I'm not actually sure how that works here, so I guess good whatever time of day it is wherever you are in the world. I'm Jack.

Some of you might have seen me around the libraries in Castle Thorne, and for good reason. That's mostly what I do. I'm a reader.

Well, and a blogger, and a gas station attendant-slash-owner, but I haven't really figured out how to translate those last two things over just yet. There's something especially horrifying about the idea of refueling horses at gas pumps, and I'm pretty sure none of you guys would like it if I slammed you with a wall of text in the middle of your day like I would when I updated my blog.

Which is exactly what I'm doing now. The irony is not lost on me. Sorry.

The point is, I'm looking for stuff to read. The libraries here are great, don't get me wrong, but the contents aren't my usual style. I'm more into the campy two dollar trash fiction of the sci-fi paperback persuasion, but I'll also take the classics! Agatha Christie, JK Rowling (at least, before she turned out to be a horrible fucking person), Tolkien. Anything from Chronicles of Narnia to Killer Clowns from Outer Space Visit Erin Brockovich 2.

"How are we supposed to lend you a book that isn't written here?" you may be asking. Well, as it turns out, I've been re-reading tons of old books in the Horizon when I find myself there. I just can't seem to summon up anything new. I guess it only works with memories, or something? Anyway, if you have anything to share, I'd really appreciate it if you could swing by my gas station. I'll give you a discount.

Thanks.

Hey everyone. I don't know if I'm supposed to introduce myself... I'm Wilhelm.

Ugh, that sounded so lame...

Fuck. How do you delete a message you're sending with your mind?

Okay, never mind. Anyway, I was wondering about a few things.

1. So...I sort of accidentally set my bed on fire. Like, with just my hands. If it wasn't already obvious, this is a new thing for me. Is this the Singularity's way of telling me to go burn something down? It's fine now, by the way. I put it out. I'm still freaking out though, so if anyone has tips on how to avoid accidentally committing arson...I'd appreciate it.

2. Everyone made a big deal about these arcana signs, but I don't really get the point of them. What do they actually mean? What are they for?

3. What does anyone do for fun around here?

Thanks.

Just a thought, considering our recent guests - what's your opinion on vampires and werewolves? Do you have them where you come from or are they just in stories? Monsters? Misunderstood? Just another type of creature?
