Just a thought, considering our recent guests - what's your opinion on vampires and werewolves? Do you have them where you come from or are they just in stories? Monsters? Misunderstood? Just another type of creature?

Werewolves and vampires. And yeah, I guess you could say that, though I've had a lot of people say they're real. They're real on my world too.

Long story short, vampires are immortals who live off the blood of humans or maybe animals, werewolves are humans who turn into wolves and sometimes lose their sense of self.

And our recent guests are those things. Eating blood and turning into... wolves.

They don't seem like they're causing that much of a problem.

Yeah. That's the story.

That's the thing, neither really has to cause a problem.

Eating human blood sounds like a pretty big problem... unless they go off synthetic?

They probably could. Or donations. Vampires have a bit of a romantic reputation, so I'd bet there'd be people lining up to donate blood if they wanted it.

Something must be lost in translation here. Blood eating is... romantic?

Not really lost in translation. I don't get it either. But I'd guess it's the whole troubled person with darkness in their heart who needs to be saved trope, if I were guessing. Werewolves get it too, though to a lesser extent.

Speaking from experience, that sounds like one big recipe for trouble. 'Saving someone with darkness in their heart' just winds up with someone turned into a missing person's case.

Or maybe I'm just pessimistic.

I'd say realistic, myself. You wouldn't catch me trying to save someone with darkness in their heart, at least not the really bad kind. Now, people with rough pasts who've done bad things, but are generally decent people, that's another story. Then again, I've been called forgiving before, when it comes to that sort of thing.

I've known people like that. "Forgiving", in their own way. So far, it seems to be working out all right for them.

In their own way? What way was that?

You'd probably call it more "don't screw around on my ship or else", and less forgiveness.

But it did work.

That sounds kind of like the opposite of forgiveness.

Depends on the perspective, I think. Probably didn't feel that way to everyone, but for the people with bounties on their heads... serving on a ship where you didn't have to worry about that kind of thing was a relief.

I guess I can see that. Supernaturals back home have to keep their heads down or they get hunted, so it would make sense to sacrifice a total lack of freedom for conditional freedom.
