[A combination of deep exasperation and resignation doesn't show in Altaïr's 'handwriting', but if it could, it absolutely would.]

We discovered a pair of mated lizards in the woods of Solvunn some time ago. One appears entirely normal, the other is half-mechanical, with gears in its midsection. It should clearly be dead regardless of where those gears came from, and yet it both lives and has fathered eggs.

[Unspoken: 'That's fucked up, right?'

Hilda's handwriting interjects, clearly addressing Altaïr. ]

[He feels as though he should be too dignified and composed for internal bickering in front of others but he absolutely is not.]

Miracle implies the presence of divinity. This is clearly something else. I would like to know what, and to know whether any other Summoned have encountered anything similar.

[ Somewhere Hilda is rolling her eyes and mimicking him but thankfully everyone else is spared the theatrics. ]

[Should Alucard have given a heads up about this? Probably. Is he here just to see how familiar the gears are to his own world? Also yes.

Alucard doesn't wave over to either Altaรฏr or Hilda. He simply approaches and offers a polite nod.]

Has anyone made sense of the gears yet?
cryptsleeper: <user name="malagraphic"> (I'll consider it)

Er. Is there a good way to call them over?

[How does one lizard, precisely?]

[A question Altaรฏr has been asking himself.]

As long as you don't startle them, they don't object to being picked up.
cryptsleeper: <user name="malagraphic"> (thinkin for a sec here)

[personal profile] cryptsleeper 2023-05-21 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Right.

[Which means that Alucard is absolutely going to abuse vampire speed to pick up Veliki. Is it over the top and completely pointless? Absolutely. Is Alucard going to feel bad about it? Not at all.

He's careful in his grip at least, bringing the lizard up to eye level to get a better look.]

How long ago was it that you found them?
cryptsleeper: <user name="malagraphic"> (thinkin for a sec here)

[personal profile] cryptsleeper 2023-05-21 04:29 pm (UTC)(link)
[Look sometimes the element of surprise helps. Alucard's pretty sure that it'll help, and he's careful as he pokes at the gears. The first question he has is material, because that points to certain needs.]

It isn't as if lizards have especially long lifespans. One would need to assume that he was an adult when this happened though, as it doesn't look as if he grew into the gears.
aquilus: (modern - twilight)

I'm inclined to agree, but I wouldn't rule anything out considering these are already extraordinary circumstances.

Do you want to be dealing with an immortal lizard?

[Alucard hopes the answer is no as he continues his examination. Carefully, he runs a finger over the machine parts, frowning. This feels off, and there is nothing present that Alucard is used to.]

Nothing is coming to my mind immediately here, I'm sorry to say.
cryptsleeper: <user name="malagraphic"> (thinkin for a sec here)

[personal profile] cryptsleeper 2023-05-28 03:16 pm (UTC)(link)
The immortality is value neutral, I'm talking from a care perspective.

[How long do you want to be looking after them????]

It's odd that he's not reacting though. What I'm most curious about is what type of bodily functions is the equipment supporting? Surely you don't stick gears to a lizard without reason.
aquilus: (pic#15822859)

[personal profile] aquilus 2023-05-29 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
[Altaรฏr will not be caring for a lizard in his elder years if that turns out to be the case, but it's probably not worth getting into an argument with Hilda about looking after their lizard children for unknown spans of time. (Even if his side of the argument would be right. Children are meant to leave the nest eventually.)]

Circulatory and respiratory, according to the experts' assessment.

[Which may or may not be correct, but it's not as though he and Hilda have the knowledge to argue.]

And I doubt that reason was either a special fondness for or dislike of this particular lizard.
cryptsleeper: <user name="malagraphic"> (thinkin for a sec here)

[personal profile] cryptsleeper 2023-05-30 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
[Alucard is going to leave the debate about elderly lizard care alone. He did not meant to set it off, and there's more important things to be had here. Mostly the point about experimentation, because it is the inevitable conclusion.]

A limb is one thing. Circulatory and respiratory are something else. Much more complex systems for one, that require some precise medical knowledge. Not that prosthetics aren't, but thinking about how the brain communicates with the body to make these functions work - and the heart as well - that says something about the knowledge the person doing this must have.

[He pauses, something surfacing in his mind.]

You two weren't here when it happened, but when Thorne was the only place capable of doing Summons, there was a jail break. It was led by two unknowns, and it wasn't clear if they had any allegiance to any factions. I have to wonder if maybe there's something in that thread worth pulling on.
aquilus: (pic#9513259)

[personal profile] aquilus 2023-05-30 02:33 pm (UTC)(link)
[Altaรฏr may not be an expert, but he has above-average knowledge of anatomy โ€” it helps with the part where he makes those systems stop working โ€” and that tells him that Alucard is right and such a contraption must be so unbelievably complex that he'd expect it to be impossible.

And yet there Veliki is, surviving and apparently thriving.]

Really.

[That certainly catches his interest.]

What happened to them afterwards? How was it achieved?
cryptsleeper: <user name="malagraphic"> (wreck with great glee)

[personal profile] cryptsleeper 2023-05-31 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Unclear, and I was not in a good state at the time myself.

[Read: Hilariously depressed and wanting to commit so much murder.]

They managed magic that stopped time for a full hour, and opened portals to Solvunn and the Free Cities. What became of them after is wholly unknown. It happened all too fast.

I don't know why they came to my mind when looking at your friend here. It could be nothing at all. But they've never reappeared, and that seems strange to me.
cryptsleeper: <user name="malagraphic"> (wreck with great glee)

[personal profile] cryptsleeper 2023-05-31 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Luck. I think a few of us were all trying to plain jail breaks, but it was harder since Thorne's dungeons nullified natural abilities.

[Hilda, it was a terrible time.]

If they had any affiliations, they did not make them known. I can't say I've seen the two around the Free Cities at any point either.

[Alucard frowns, weighing the thoughts carefully.]

We know that there have been Summoned in the past. Maybe they left some work behind, or shared notes that have been kept private for generations, resulting in what we see now.
aquilus: (apple - observe)

[personal profile] aquilus 2023-06-02 01:01 am (UTC)(link)
That could be the case. Or they could be entirely separate matters. We don't have enough knowledge to make a reliably educated guess.

[Which is annoying. He doesn't like being trapped wandering about in the dark. Still, he's learned something interesting about the Summoned who came before him; he'll remember it.]

But there has to be a way to change that. We'll just have to trace what leads we can, and see where they take us.
cryptsleeper: <user name="malagraphic"> (I'll consider it)

[personal profile] cryptsleeper 2023-06-02 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I wish I could suggest places where you might pick up on those leads - either related to the two individuals or past Summoned. The latter might be easier, with the right kind of library access.

[Possibly just ask Viktor to go snooping? Who knows.]

Just let me know how this develops. I'm curious.
