[ awkward is one way of putting it, but awkward also isn't a conversation ender. they've been through similar situations, and probably will in the future still, but that's not going to change the baseline - steve is here (still, again, somehow) and sam's not about to waste that.

[ There are few things that get Claude's attention faster than the phrase 'big dinner' and especially so when it's tied to an open invitation. He might not recognize the holiday, but that's not the important part (in his mind, anyway). ]

Any special requests for what we might bring, if anything? Or, better yet, if you're looking for actual help in the form of setting up I can offer that much in exchange for the hospitality.
