[ he can tell that she's trying, that whatever it is that is important that she needs to talk to him about not only takes effort and focus, but it doesn't come easy to her. which isn't to say that julie has ever made it out to be easy, but she's always had a seamless kind of connection. something that sam hasn't understood, entirely, but he knows is her's.

now it feels like she has to fight it, like she has to somehow keep from being overwhelmed, and he feels himself frown - worried, as he always is, about what it is she's able to do and how there isn't much he can do to help with it.

so he listens, because that's all he can do. and what he hears...well, at first sam thinks good, because if this isn't something to do with the singularity (because truthfully, when julie tells him anything about the singularity, he believes it. trusts it implicitly. there's nothing she needs to prove) then it's something to do with people, and people he can handle. people are something that can be handled.

but then she mentions a new loneliness and breaking their connection and his stomach drops. he comes to the conclusion the same moment she says it aloud. ]

We won't let that happen. [ the assurance comes quick, but there is honest belief behind the words. ] If whatever happened isn't magical, then it's just people, and that's fightable. We'll find them, and we'll get them back before any of that happens. [ because he has to focus on what he can do, on what is doable. actions are the only thing that will help any of them, now, and sam's going to take that and run with it.

[ the delay is what gets to him, and while there's plenty of other things he can be doing - other responses that have started pouring in, but still he can't quite find it in him to settle. and when her response finally does come, come of it clear, some of it just as corrupted and garbled as before, sam feels himself start to get frustrated. ]

I've begun to determine the location of the missing using trackers sent with two of our number. The signal is weak and intermittent, but it's somewhere to the north of Cadens.

[he is not interested in debating the ethics of this plan at the time, but, you know, he supposes he can't stop anyone from yelling at him about this.]

I'm currently improving the receiver and additional trackers in an effort to increase the range and strength of the devices, but it will take some time (and, likely, support from the government). It may be possible to confirm northeast vs northwest if I'm able to get outside of the city--that is, closer to the signal. I would need assistance or an escort doing so, or I can provide the receiver to a capable party.

Additionally, if any of our number in Thorne or Solvunn are attempting to determine the location via similar methods, I would be able to further triangulate based on your data, if you're willing to share it.

I could lose the signal at any time, so the faster we're able to act on this, the better chance we have.

I will be tracking on foot as soon as the castle gives us portals. I plan on starting at the mountain border of Thorne and Solvunn.

[ Which is parallel, not north of Cadens, but given that they know people have been taken from everywhere by now - there might be another trail close where two factions meet. And given that he's suspicious of Solvunn in general. Natives have been going missing in Solvunn for a long time. ]

I would try to hop the borders for extra range, but I'll likely have a babysitter to mind after.
