It depends on the genre and the author, I guess. In most of them, they're like... Tall, beautiful, wise. Inherently magical, usually hundreds of years old. Pointy ears. A little pretentious.

In others they're like a foot tall, live in trees, and may or may not be used as unpaid slave labor to help make holiday presents for children by a fat man that delivers them all in a magical sleigh.

Usually the former.
